Daniel 2:14-19
Daniel 2:14-19 (NIV)14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of , Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of . 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Message
King Nebuchadnezzar actually sets his crazy plan into motion and orders the execution of all the wise men in the country. Talk about a tough annual review process, one wrong answer and you are executed! Once again we are able to learn some leadership lessons from Daniel. When Daniel hears of the command, he first goes to the commander of the guards to be sure he knows what the real issue at hand is, using “wisdom and tact”. Next, he goes directly to the king to ask for permission to solve the problem, requesting time to find the answer. Daniel never avoids the issue or conflict, but takes it all head on. He also continues to go to the SAME place for answers. His first task is to enlist the help of his three friends, whom he asks to “…plead for mercy from the God of heaven…” Daniel was aware that the answer from God could be one of judgment or mercy, or an answer that was not what he wanted. Nonetheless, he “pleads” with God for God’s answer. Daniel’s leadership lessons:1) Confront the issues and find out the facts, using wisdom and tact;2) Enlist the help of wise men3) Seek the answer from God alone. These are three good principles for us to follow each and every day.
